Born the ninth child in Jellico where he grew up. As a youth he worked in coal mines where he was given the name "Chalk". His job was to count the coal cars coming out of the mine by making chalk marks on the wall. He served in the US Army during World War II and was wounded in action. He married Mary Naomi Baldwin and six children were of this union.
